Waste Robotics News, October 2026
AI sorting operators raised project finance and signed municipal partnerships, while river cleanup won a major grant. These numbers and dated updates show where investment and deployment are heading.
400+ AI sorting systems AMP has deployed in North America, Asia and Europe (AMP, 2026)
500,000+ tons of municipal waste a year for AMP's Virginia regional system (AMP, 2026)
410-628 tons of plastic carried into the Pacific each year by LA's rivers (element14 Community, 2026)
Galvanize leads $70 million financing for AMP's Virginia sorting build-out
· Funding
AMP raised $70 million in project debt led by Galvanize to build a new sortation facility and an organics processing system in Portsmouth, Virginia. The regional system, part of a 20-year partnership with the Southeastern Public Service Authority, is designed to process more than 500,000 tons of municipal waste a year and divert at least half from landfill.
Why it matters: Capital is flowing to AI sorting sites that run for years, so equipment makers are becoming operators. Ask any sorting vendor whether it sells machines, runs plants or both, and who is accountable for performance.
Kent County, Michigan, adds AI sorting ahead of its waste-to-energy plant
· Partnership
Kent County's Department of Public Works will install an AMP ONE system at its waste-to-energy facility in Michigan. Using computer vision and air-jet sorting, it will process about 25 tons of mixed municipal waste an hour, pulling out cardboard and plastics before the rest is burned for energy. AMP already sorts at the county's recycling center.
Why it matters: Counties are asking sorting systems to handle mixed municipal waste, not only clean curbside recyclables. Start with one line, and let a scoped pilot, as in THG's Pilot program, measure purity and recovery before any wider rollout.
Ocean Cleanup plans river interceptors for the LA and San Gabriel rivers before 2028
· Deployment
The Ocean Cleanup intends to extend its autonomous river interceptors beyond Ballona Creek to the LA River and San Gabriel River ahead of the 2028 Olympics. The rivers carry an estimated 410 to 628 tons of plastic to the Pacific each year, and Ballona Creek's Interceptor 007 has collected more than 248,000 pounds of trash.
Why it matters: Autonomous river barges are moving from pilots to city programs, usually with local partners and sponsors. If you manage waterways or harbors, ask about collection volumes, the crew needed to empty barges and how debris is handled afterward.
AMP finishes Virginia expansion to 108,000 tons of mixed waste a year
· Milestone
AMP completed acceptance testing on its expanded Portsmouth, Virginia facility, which now processes 108,000 tons of municipal solid waste a year, about 296 tons a day. It is the first stage of a 20-year SPSA system serving 1.2 million residents in eight communities, with a second sortation facility planned for late 2027.
Why it matters: AMP is putting new capacity into mixed municipal waste, a harder stream than clean curbside bales. Whatever you buy, check floor loading, power and Wi-Fi first; a Site Readiness Survey on THG does that before anything ships.
Google agrees to buy biochar carbon removal from AMP's Virginia project
· Market
Google will buy carbon removal credits from biochar that AMP's Virginia project makes from organic waste, covering 200,000 metric tonnes of CO2e by 2030. The project, serving the Southeastern Public Service Authority, aims to divert at least half of the 540,000 tons of municipal waste it handles each year from landfill.
Why it matters: Carbon markets may add a second revenue line to sorting and processing sites, alongside recycled commodities. Treat credit income as an upside, and judge any system first on purity, throughput and uptime.
